This session reviews the requirements of 14 CFR part 65 subpart D, which concerns aviation mechanics. It walks through the requirements for an individual to apply for a mechanic’s certificate, then defines the privileges and limitations bestowed on that individual by his or her certificate. Finally, it covers the enhancements to a mechanic’s privileges produced by obtaining Inspection Authorization.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants will have the tools to understand:

• The applicability requirements of subpart D and their natural flow from experience to knowledge to skill and the importance of practical experience.

• The privileges and limitations of the ratings issued under subpart D and how they impact the work of the certificate holder.

• The “enhancement” of the certificate’s privileges provided through inspection authorization.
